Ghost Controls access control installation in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $220 – $480 installed, depending on your opener model and which access control component failed. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible keypads, receivers, remotes, and control boards on our trucks, and most swaps take under an hour once we’re on site. The way most owners find us: the keypad stops opening the gate, the remote works sometimes but not others, or the gate opens on its own after a storm rolls through.
That last one is more common than you’d think down here. Fort Lauderdale’s humidity and afternoon lightning are brutal on access control boards. Nico Alvarez and our crew have replaced more water-damaged Ghost Controls receivers in the neighborhoods off Las Olas Boulevard and in Victoria Park than we can count. It’s usually not the opener motor itself. It’s the access control side: the small board that listens for your remote, the keypad ribbon cable, or the antenna wire that’s been chewed by a rodent. The good news is most of these are straightforward swaps. Let’s dig into what applies to your setup.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
This page covers access control installation for Ghost Controls gate openers across their current lineup: the AXP1 single swing, AXP3 dual swing, AXD, AXDP series, and the older TSS1 and TDS2 models that are still everywhere in South Florida. The access control components (keypads, receivers, remotes, external antennas, and wired push buttons) are largely cross-compatible across these series, but there’s one gotcha you need to know before ordering parts online.
The older TSS1/TDS2 models and the newer AXP/AXD lines use different control board receptacles for some plug-in accessories. Specifically, the wired keypad connector changed pin configuration around 2019. If a modern Ghost Controls keypad won’t plug into your older board, it’s not defective. It’s a series mismatch. A quality OEM replacement or a properly matched aftermarket equivalent (we carry both) solves it. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Ghost Controls, but we’re factory-familiar with their gear and we know which parts interchange and which don’t.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing
- The keypad lights up but the gate won’t move. This usually means the keypad’s sending a signal but the receiver board isn’t processing it. Sometimes it’s a corroded terminal; on older outdoor keypads in Fort Lauderdale, it’s often moisture inside the keypad housing itself after a season of salt air.
- The remote only works from 10 feet away, or not at all. The Ghost Controls antenna wire is delicate. It gets pinched, cut by weedeaters, or chewed by critters. If your range has been shrinking for months, the access control receiver or antenna is the likely culprit, not the remote battery.
- Your gate opens on its own, usually at night. This is a failed receiver board picking up stray radio signals, or a wet keypad shorting out. It’s both a security issue and a safety issue. You don’t want a gate swinging open unexpectedly onto a busy Fort Lauderdale street.
- The gate opened mid-cycle and now the opener beeps but nothing moves. That beep sequence is a diagnostic code. Ghost Controls boards flash specific patterns for issues like a photo-eye obstruction or a limit switch fault. If you’re hearing a beep code after a power blip from a summer storm, the control board may have taken a surge.
- You hear a clicking sound from the control box but the arm doesn’t engage. That click is a relay trying to fire. If the motor isn’t getting power past that point, the access control relay on the board has likely welded or burned out. The fix is a board replacement, not a motor replacement, and a good tech will spot that in five minutes with a multimeter.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Ghost Controls access control installation in Fort Lauderdale runs between $220 and $480 before taxes. A simple keypad swap lands on the low end. A new receiver board with programming tends to fall in the $300 – $420 range once you factor parts, programming every remote you own, and testing the full cycle. A complete access control overhaul (keypad, receiver, all new remotes, antenna relocation) can touch $500 – $600 on older systems where everything’s been baked in Florida sun and salt for a decade.
Here’s how the line items usually break down:
- Access control part (OEM or quality aftermarket): $90 – $260
- Installation labor (including programming and testing): $110 – $190
- Remote re-programming (if needed): $25 – $45
You get a written price before we start. That’s not a courtesy, it’s how Calder Gate Repair operates. The number we agree to at the door is the number on your invoice. AfterDIY or Call Us?
Access control work sits in a funny middle zone. Some of it is genuinely safe to check yourself: confirm the keypad’s wiring terminals are still snug, replace a remote battery, make sure the antenna wire isn’t visibly cut. If you find a loose wire and want to tighten it, kill power to the opener at the breaker first. Ghost Controls boards run on 12V, but the opener motor itself runs on 120V AC, and you don’t want to brush your hand against a live terminal inside that housing.
Where DIY goes wrong: wiring a new keypad or receiver into the wrong terminals, which can fry the new part and the board behind it. Also, some Ghost Controls boards require a specific programming sequence to learn your existing remotes. Get the sequence wrong and the gate won’t respond, and you’ll spend an afternoon guessing. If your opener is doing something unexpected (opening on its own, beeping), call us at (754) 354-2542. Tell me what it’s doing wrong and we’ll tell you what it costs to fix, in writing, before we start.
FAQs
In our experience, an outdoor keypad in Fort Lauderdale lasts 4 to 7 years before salt air and humidity degrade its buttons or internal contacts. Receiver boards tend to last 5 to 10 years, but surge damage from summer lightning can shorten that dramatically. Indoor-installed or protected components last noticeably longer.
Sometimes, but rarely worth it. A corroded keypad terminal can be cleaned, but if the keypad face is sun-baked and buttons are dead, replacement is cheaper than the labor to rebuild it. We’d rather tell you that honestly than sell you parts you don’t need. Call (754) 354-2542 and we’ll give you a straight answer.
A straightforward keypad or remote receiver swap takes 45 to 90 minutes on site, including programming and full cycle testing. A complete access control overhaul on an older system can run 2 to 3 hours. We’ll give you a live arrival time you can track, not a four-hour window.
We keep Ghost Controls keypads, receivers, remotes, and antenna kits stocked on our vehicles, along with quality aftermarket equivalents. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing systems. If we don’t have your exact part, we’ll tell you when it lands and get you scheduled.
